405 Exhaust Flange seals?

I'm getting ready to put my exhaust system back together on my '89 Mi16
and I'm wondering if there is any sort of gasket or sealant that needs to
go between the flanges to prevent leaks or is the seal good enough with
just the clamps?
The main reason I ask is because when I took the system apart it seemed
that there was some orange substance stuck between the flanges.
