True - a lot of this does depend on the driver and road. But I think
what is being considered here is a straight-line drag race. In which
case the main variable is the driver. However, at 217 HP for the
normal Turbo, and 250 for the Turbo S, the 944 Turbo has the decided
advantage. And at higher speeds, the aerodynamic advantage of the 944
will be readily apparent. Over a 1/4 mile, I am guessing that even a
bad driver in the 944 Turbo could beat a 505 Turbo. Here are some
factory figures:

1986 Turbo / 1989 Turbo S / 1984 944
0-60 6.0 sec 5.5 sec 8.7 sec
1/4 mile 14.2s 13.5s 16.4s

Now, assuming that both drivers are equally talented, which car would
you put your money on? I would bet on the 944 Turbo, regardless of
whether this was a straight-line race, or whether there are curves
thrown in as well. As much as I think that Peugeots are great cars, I
think that these figures speak for themselves

Depends on the driver and the road too... :)The gearing can help in some
situations
also. My Lancia
has a very average 0-60 time, but in gear acceleration
and the transmission ratio makes it ideal for twisty roads.

I've dusted a 924 turbo even if the 0-60 is much
shorter for the Porsche. On a straight line acceleration
I'd get beaten by pretty much anything modern however.

That's the same with the Fiat x-1/9. It didn't have that great
an acceleration, but the weight distribution made it a real
go-kart in term of handling. In fact, it's one of the most
succesfull car in SCCA autocrossing.

In the case of the 505 turbo, in a rallye, the 505 would
win, mainly because of the clearance under the car. In
a straight line, dont count on it.
