I have found ZF to be less than candid about the 4hp22's problems in the
past. Feigned surprise at the mention of any problem with the transmission
seemed to be the well-trained house response.

I think a hard-shifting 4hp22 is not a proper-shifting 4hp22. I have had at
least 4 turbogas and one TD in which the shifts are hardly apparent in
normal acceleration. The tach just sits on 2200 and the car accelerates
smoothly through all the gears, with a little jerk when the converter locks
up at about 55mph. The higher the rpm at which the shift occurs, the more
you feel it, especially if your kickdown cable is so adjusted that light
throttle holds it in longer.
