86 turbo gas - potentiometer

Sorry to bombard you guys, but hey the questions are looming now! We took the potentiometer off of this "parts car" and put it on my sons 86 turbo gas auto where the computer light kept flashing six's. We didn't change the adjustment, just bolted it on and upped the idle and it is running fine, with no flashes. Question? Potentiometer cost new $133, peugeot part $250+, what does this do? Is something like this used on Volvo's? Is their a bosch counterpart? I was surprised to find the base was magnetic? Is this part used on 85 turbo's? on non turbo's? Thanks for any ideas or suggestions. Just think If I wasn't thinking and working on this I would have a boat or something!. dtanner@teleport.com
