Some of you may have read under the subject "Wrecked peugeot" about my
hitting a horse, with my86 505S sedan, on a dark country road about a
month ago. Well, after hitting the horse, and dealing with the
insurance Co., I now have a check in hand for $2,790.00 which I think
is fair compensation for the loss. They let me buy the Peugeot back
for $100.00, and I have been repairing it. I have most all the parts
and pieces bent back to their original shape and all that is left to do
is to replace the hood and decide on painting.
This weekend I'm in the process of replacing the water-pump on the SN6
engine. I have the magnetic/electric engine fan , and air conditioning
with the aux fan and condenser. Two problems arose during the
replacement and I'm hoping I can get some input from someone who has
"been here" before.
PROBLEM #1:
I bought a new waterpump from the local discount parts house, for $60.00
rather than getting the "Genuine" Peugeot OE pump from the local
Peugeot dealer for $171.00. I made a special trip to pick it up and
when I got it home where I could actually compare it to the original all
is OK except: There is only one tapped hole (approx 1/2 inch diameter)
for a temp sensor which is located near the bottom of the pump under the
thermostat area. This sensor is marked 12V 40W and has two contacts in a
brown plastic connection. I am assuming this is the engine cooling fan
thermocontact sensor as shown in the wiring schematic, but I'm not
sure. My old pump had TWO tapped holes, the one described above and a
second hole (approx 1/4 inch diameter) mid way between the 1/2 inch
tapped hole and the flange for the thermostat. This second tapped
hole also has a smaller sensor in it but I don't know what it is for. A
single white wire (no ID Number that I can see) goes into a harness to
????. Could be the air conditioning aux fan thermostat?? Anyway,
since I don't know for sure what these temp sensors control I hope to
gain some insight from some one here. Maybe I don't need the smaller
one??
Right now I have another pump ordered from a different local discount
house with the understanding if it gets here and doesn't have both holes
I can return it. I already have made arrangements to return the first
one with only one hole. If the next one is also wrong, I may have to
bite the bullet and go to the Peugeot dealer and pay the $171. Cry,
Cry, Cry!! Ha!!
Which brings me to:
PROBLEM # 2: How in the @#%$^ do you get the self engaging fan and hub
assembly off of the waterpump without destroying it?? I have checked
it and by hooking directly to the battery it engages nicely when
energized, so I am assuming it can be removed and reused with a new
pump. The carbon brush assembly is loose and works ok also. I think
that the fan belt pully is keyed to the shaft of the waterpump, but I
can't seem to get the nut loose. A wheel puller?? Maybe I just will
clamp it down tight and loosen it or else!!! Any suggestions will be
appreciated!! Thanks in advance for any advice, hints, sympathy. HA!!
By the way, I'm finding this Peugeot List a great source of
information!!! Last week I found and fixed the tachyometric relay in my
85 505S SW and it has been starting EVERY time since then. I didn't
replace the relay, I looked at it carefully with a magnifying glass and
found that the contact of the electromagnet was cracked. I re-soldered
it and PRESTO. success. This has been a problem for the last year!!!
