85 505 front door hold mechanism

The front driver's side door hold mechanism on my 85 505 wagon stopped
working a week ago, it no longer holds the door open in the 2 detent
positions. It's the type with the mechanism in the door rather than the
clamp type on door frame on 84's. What usually goes wrong with these?
I have not taken it apart yet to see.
