505 electrical problems

My 87 505 STI (V6) just started to act strangely. I drive mostly at night, so
my lights are usually on all the time. Lately I've noticed that all lights
(headlights
interior and dashboard lights) turning from bright to dim about once a second.
It's like someone would be playing with the dimmer switch, turning it up and
down every second. It's not some loose connection, since it doesn't react
to road bumps, it does it all the time, a little faster at higher RPM.
I remember the same thing happening a few months ago, but it went away
by itself the next day. Now it seems to be here to stay.

Any idea what might be causing it? Anyone had similar problem?
Is it the alternator going bad, or is there a separate voltage regulator
somewhere?

On my previous cars (Audi, VW) the Bosch alternators had replaceable
voltage regulator/brush set in the alternator, so I didn't have to replace
the whole
alternator. Is it similar on the 505?
