In general, I always recommend oe shocks on Peugeots. (Usually, rebuilding
the fronts is what I recommend.) I have never found anything better, and
very little (always French, though) that even comes close to Peugeot's own
shocks.

With the 405, I have no experience with aftermarket shocks. I assume the
same holds true. I haven't even felt a 405 shock off the car. The MI16
rears are stiffer than the J2's, I believe. The fronts are the same on both.

Unlike all previous US model Peugeots, the 405 fronts are not made to be
disassemblable. I haven't tried cutting the capnut off of one, but my guess
is that they would be rebuildable if you could reinstall the capnut.

My warehouse carries a French Gabriel rear shock for MI16 at $80. each.
New oe shocks are $115 each. My guess is that a used J2 rear shock would
outperform and outlast a new Gabriel, but that is based on 505, 504, and 404
experience only.

I have no used MI16 shocks, but I could pull a pair of J2s with 70K miles
for $100.
Are you sure your shocks need replacing?
