Idling Blues

I hope this doesn't seem too naive or simplistic, but here goes:

In February I bought a 1986 505 turbo with 87,000 miles on it from a
friend. It is a car that I'd driven off and on for the previous 5-6
years without a problem.

When I took it in for a smog certificate, the garage said that some
adjustments needed to be made in order for it to pass, but that after
driving it around for a couple of miles, it was certifiable. Since then,
it has been nothing but grief.

And all of the grief comes back to the alternator and the battery. The
alternator has been changed 3 times, the battery recharged and finally
replaced, and maxxed out my AAA towing for the year in two months. It
has been one repair bill a month since February. Now when it is idling,
it shakes like crazy.

A friend suggested today that what they had probably done was fool
around with the idle until it passed and never restored it. Does this
sound plausible?

This is the first car I've ever owned and I really enjoyed it until now.
I'd hate to think that I'm going to have to get rid of it, but this
can't go on indefinitely. I can't afford these kind of bills and I don't
want a car that I can't rely on. Any ideas? TIA.
