Yes, there is a huge cost decrease with belts. In place of a cam seal used on belted engines there is at least one more cover, gasket & gasket surface and the cost of belts and belt pulleys are far less than chains and chain wheels (OEM). From a high performance stand point, belts are superior owing to the lower rotating inertia and engine weight. Well designed belt drives now last more than 100K. On diesels gears are still the most respected design, where accuracy and longevity are primary.
