504 washer pump wiring

I'm about to replace the dead windshield washer pump on my '74 504, probably
with a generic universal replacement pump from the local parts store. One
wire to the pump on my car is white, the other is brown or dark red (it was
dusk when I checked). Which is positive, and which is negative? Thanks!
