All:

I recently signed on to the group and already feel empowered as a
Peugeot owner in a veritable ocean of automotive mediocrity on parade
in the US. After having read the group's exchanges and sampled a good
portion of the archives (thanks Jim), I am more convinced than ever that
all my friends who pay $400-700 per/mo
to "own" cookie-cutter "brand-name" models are at least as naive as
someone who owns three Peugeots and nothing else (sold my VW last
fall). Thank you all for that boost in self-assurance -- and no shrink
fees to pay !

I have to make a trip to North Carolina in early July and the V6 is the
only one with a working A/C. It rides like a horsecart however owing
to two leaky front struts. In addition, it has an exhaust leak where
the converter and the downpipe come together. These have to be fixed
before I can make the trip. Here are my queries:

1. I have successfully rebuilt the front struts in my 2.2L wagon by
putting in new seals and original Peugeot shock oil. Cost me less
than 50.00 and the original peugeot ride is back (my own labor). Does
anybody know whether the 505 STI (V6) front shocks can be similarly
rebuilt ? local Peugeot dealer tells me that a separate shock
rebuilding kit for the V6 was not made but that I might try the kit made
for the 2.2L as long as the strut, spring seat and the piston inside are
not damaged. Also, is it advisable to replace the strut bearings every
time new shocks are installed (as was the case with my VW)? If not, is
there a simple test to determine whether or not they need replacing?
Finally, are there any special things to pay attention to in the process
of rebuilding the shocks and reinstalling the struts on the V6s?

2. I gather that it is rare for the V6s to have exhaust related
problems. for some reason mine has a leak in the down pipe and
converter joint. My trusted pipe bender won't touch the exhaust until I
have replacement parts ready should things fall apart while he's trying
to fix it. Those of you who have experience dealing wih V6 exhaust
problems and parts suppliers please advise. Most likely I will need the
passanger side downpipe (the one with the Y), possibly a muffler, and a
bunch of exhaust hangers. Quo Vadis?

Thank you in advance.
