Just a little bragging on my part. My '89 405 S still has the original
belt and tensioner with 96,000 miles. My goal is to "go till it breaks".
To be honest, I have done periodic maintenance on it by adjusting the
tension at 44,000 and 89,000. I can tell when it needs adjusting by
listening under the hood while idling. If it is loose there will be a
popping noise as it vibrates against a mounting post, for the covers, on
the head. Adjusting is easy following Haynes and takes about an hour. I
feel that this has been the key to my success as I drive fairly hard,
and realize that there is nothing "special" about the belt or the car. I
just take care of it. BTW if it does break no harm will be done to the
engine (unlike Mi16). I do have my AAA card handy though. :)
