Ten foot rule?

Is there a "ten foot" rule that I don't know about?
or should I say, "Is there a ten foot rule we should be applying to our
cars?"

This "ten-foot-rule" was first pointed out to me a couple of weeks ago.
I had taken a used alloy wheel into my mechanic and asked what him what
it would cost to have it refinished. He looked at me kind of askew,
grabbed the wheel, held it and asked me how far back I had to stand
before I couldn't see the scratches and dings. Turns out it was around
ten feet. He said he could live with that and I should too.

Since then it seems I've been running into this rule a lot. Maaco of
course is the preeminent purveyor of the ten foot rule. How far back do
you have to stand before a Maaco paint job to look good? :-)

Seems I've been applying a two foot rule when it comes to maintaining the
appearance of my Peugeots. (Not that they pass this test, but it's the
standard by which I've been trying to hold them to. I can honestly say
at ten feet in the rain my cars look really good.)

Maybe it's an age handicap, one foot of distance for every year of the
cars age. Ten-year-old cars - ten feet, twenty-year-old cars - twenty
feet and so on.

I'm sure there's a similar rule for the mechanics of the car as well but
I haven't figured that one out yet.

Philip

Please note outside of the US this rule would be the "3 meter" rule.
