Yes, there is a mechanical equivalent to the visual 10' (3 meter) rule.
How far back must one stand for the car to start to purr instead of grind,
rumble and belch? If it sounds O.K. at ten feet, your fine. No more valve
slap and chatter, no more rusty muffler rumble, no more belt screech, engine
knock, or fuel pump whine. Better yet turn the car off and it sounds brand
new!
