gas leak? '87-505-sti

Never a dull moment. While driving my '87 505-sti 2.2l ZDJL, on the
highway, I noticied the last quarter tank of gas quickly dissapear. It
happened so fast that I could watch its progress. I got off at my exit.
As I coasted down the off-ramp the level steadily dropped. Then as I
accelerated again after off-ramp, I noticied the level go up a bit. It
would go down to empty line at stop and then a little above when
accelerating. Thankfully I made it to a gas station. Drove another 10
minutes to get home and level seemed regular at 3/4 tank.

What does this mean? New fuel pump?

While on the highway I did smell a weird smell about ten minutes after
gas level started dropping, but it didn't smell like gas and I was
driving right next to a oil/chemical harbor dock.
