hissing sound from engine compartment

Ever since I got the '87 505 (coming up on one year), I've noticied a
very loud hissing sound from the engine compartment near the air intake
and air hoses. I can't tell where its coming from with the noise from
the engine itself. Does anyone know if this is normal for my car, or if
not, what could be wrong.
