I guess it all depends on your environment and car age.
The French do make good rubber and I have seen worse on American
cars.
I have replaced a few hoses and intend to do more when I get the
chance.
In the mean time I carry a Fire Extinguisher under my front
passenger seat.
I don't want to be some poor chump watching his car burn on the side
of the road!
That leads me to a question of my own.
Suppose my engine should catch on fire... what is the safest method
of putting the fire out?
Should I lift the hood (if possible) after popping it, or will that
allow the fire more oxygen?
What about just sticking the hose in the little space a popped hood
allows?
These are always the questions one ponders in hindsight.....
