Something broke... ;-(

Hello all - Claudette (85 505S TD) had her first failure in my keep
yesterday. I was 200 miles into a 500 mile round trip when a hissing
flapping sort of noise began to occur whenever I had to step on the
throttle. This got progressively worse over the next 20 miles or so until
it became the full bodied roar of an unmuffled turbo diesel. I am assuming
that something in the exhaust system broke up front - the sound seems to be
coming from under the passengers feet. I have not had a chance to put her
up on ramps to take a look yet - any common culprits? It also now makes a
slight clank when I start it - I figure that is the two parts of the
exhaust hitting each other. Still, other than the noise she ran like a
clock all the way. One other thing, when sitting for a long time at idle,
how warm should the engine get? I was sitting a drive-though for a long
time 15+ minutes the other night, the temp gauge got almost up to the last
white line - two-three white lines above where it normally sits. I turned
on the A/C (which tuns on the electric fan) and it quickly dropped a good
bit. I am wondering if my main fan is not engaging?
