Kevin- The first thing you might want to check is the down pipe coming
directly off of the turbo. There is a flange there with two springs on
either side that have been known to break off due to the heat. There is also
a gasket there that may have broken up.
The other very remote possibility is that a bolt crack off of the exhaust
manifold. That will make a VERY loud sound. I have had that happen on my 504
with the same engine and it wasn't a pleasant experience. You could hear the
car coming for miles. Check the bolts coming out of the manifold all the
same to see if all of the heads of the bolts are still there. Chances are
though you popped a hole in the exhaust somewhere. How old is the exhaust
system? Was it replaced recently?
