I don't know about the clunk without hearing it, but all cars will react to driveline torque by rising on one end and lowering on the other, this is called "squat". Has nothing to do with whether the brakes are applied, happens more with softly sprung cars, and varies quite a bit beyond spring softness depending on suspension design particulars. Actually I guess a Citroen Activa would not do this, since it hydraulically compensates for dive, squat, and roll.
