Can someone help me with the symptoms of a broken Climate ECU?

For years now I've had A/C problems. Today on a trip the A/C ran fine
for three hours only to rapidly die for about an hour and them
spontaneously revive after a half hour stop, only to die again about an
hour later.

The compressor seems to be running fine, in fact it runs all the time
regardless of the switch position, the air is very cold up until the time
the air flow fades away.

The blower fans seems to be running but no air is coming out of the
vents.

Is this typical of an ECU failure? What are the chances of getting retro
kits from England and installing the manual controls in our cars?

Is there a fix other than buying a new ECU or cutting a hole in my glove
box?

Thanks for your help, the problem always seems to come up on long hot
trips when the kids and the wife are in the car:-(
