So, my '87 turbo 505 wagon has come out of the "hostpital" with a "new" (used) cyl.head on top its N9TE, plus a new timing chain. Overall cost of the operation : USD 2,475. Oooch ! I gotta be mad -- actually, that's what most people around think, incl. my wife and the mechanic !
Incidentally, on Fri, 01 Jan 1999 Rulon Pope wrote : "Isn't the conventional wisdom that the heads typically crack in places that can't be successfully repaired (near the valves)."
Well, I don't know about wisdom, but that was the case with mine !
It may have been a coincidence, but I had the "calorstat" changed, too, as I suspect it got stuck, and overheating probably ensued (I hadn't engine temp reading at the dash then)...
I don't think it was related to the head crack : the timing chain was (well, had been for who knows how long) completely loose. With a new one, and especially a new tensionneer, it now sure runs sooo much more smoothly. Of course, it's still not a V6, but then I haven't had everything replaced on this engine yet :-)
