'88 505 Turbo 5 spd speedo cable hookup/repair

Just after I finished fixing all the instruments on my IP cluster (nice to have a gas gauge that doesn't jump like a cardiac monitor), about four miles into my trip to work today, the speedo and the odo stopped working. I popped the cluster and verified that the cable isn't turning, at least not at the dash. So it's either broken, or else it's come detached at the pickup. So three questions: (1) where's the pickup? and (2) how hard a job is cable replacement on this car? and (3) has anyone had the cable fail with little warning? (I noticed a very slight speed-related noise upon first starting out; but on every other car I've had the cable fail on, it usually makes a heck of a speed-related grinding/rubbing racket before dying.)
