To speed up engine warming, the route to the radiator is cut off so coolant only circulates aroung the block, until a preset engine temp is reached.
So IMHO you're heating end of the system...

To be honest I have not any personal experience with the matter, so I dare not recommend a location for your heater, except that the closer to the cylinder (head)s, the better.
