405DL Heater Control - replacing auto control w/ manual

In an attempt to convert my 405 heater from automatic to manual control this
weekend (using one of those automatic-to-manual carburetor choke cable
kits), I ran into a problem. Following the Haynes manual instructions, I
took apart the center of the dash to access the heater control panel, and
main heater unit. However, I realized that I was barking up the wrong tree
here, as I wanted to access the air flap control motor rather than the
rotary controls (as there is no mechanical link there). So I reassembled
the dash and removed the carpeting panel from the passenger side of the
center console (to the left of the footwell area). Here I found the heater
control ECU, but not the air flap control box. I went to the other side,
but could not remove the carpeting on the driver's side without breaking the
plastic clips. Am I still headed in the wrong area, or was I on the right
track, but just did not notice the flapper motor when I saw it? Also, once
I find the elusive motor, is there an actual cable that I can attach my new
actuator cable to, or is there some other means of attaching this cable to
the flapper motor? I feel that given the 405 climate control's track
record, this has to be the most reliable and economical solution. Anyone
else on the list ever do this to a 405?
