My mechanic has done this on several 405s, using 504 heater control cables.
It only results in about a 75 degree rotational angle between cold and
hot, but it works fine. The 504 cables are unstranded wire with a loop on
one end, in a nylon sheath, with a molded mounting tab near one end to
secure the housing.

I haven't seen exactly how he did it, but I just spoke with him, and he
thinks that we could sell the kit with instructions for $25. Gotta get
some more 504 cables first, though.
