We have an intermittent problem where the engine either suddenly appears to
"skip a beat" (as though
it lost ignition for a fraction of a second) or entirely stops dead. Very
scary, no warning, just motoring along in
commuter traffic bumper to bumper at 100kph and the car suddenly loses
power. Sometimes you can start it
again immediately and other times you have to wait a few minutes : a few
days ago we had a 40 degree C day
(100 for americans) and it took 15 mins before the car would start again,
and this happened 3 times on the way home, which is normally a 20 minute
drive. These problems can also occur
on very cold days (it gets down to freezing over night here in winter), but
seem less frequent in winter.
We do have a concertina hose connecting under the air intake line, before
the filter, that has a broken fastener
and so it falls out over time. Hopefully the service centre has fixed that
so it is fastened properly. They reckon
that it is connected to the oil (crankcase?) system and even with that hose
off, it should not be able to cause
any ignition problems, as it is used to bring heat into the air intake on
cold mornings. I am suspicious because
every time we get this ignition problem we open the bonnet and find the
concertina metal hose has come off.
The service center has connected up the ECU diagnostics system and reckon
that no errors or problems are being
reported at all. The fuel pump seems to be ok. The car will sit at idle on a
test bed for hours without any hiccups.
They suspect faulty wiring somewhere (eg dry joint) but have no idea where.
Perhaps the hose above shorts out something when it falls off? :-)
Has anyone heard of anything similar?
We love the car but it is too dangerous driving it in traffic and so we
either solve this problem or get rid of the car.
