Subject: Mi16 timing belt renewal
part 3 of three-part posting
The rest is just reversal of steps. To refit mounting bracket I first
raised engine and then slid the bracket onto the four bolts on the
block and hand tightened. Then I lowered engine until the right
mounting bracket arm (with single hole) sat just atop the mount bolt.
then I had someone lower engine while I guided bracket onto bolt ( I had
to push bolt towards the engine just a little). BTW, for this purpose
lifting under oilpan did not work; better to lift from under lower rear
engine mount right near R inner driveshaft.
Other things to watch for:
check for oil leaks/spray into timing belt housing area. Oil cracks
belts and you should get to the source of the leak. I suspect some oil
seepage in my car's timing area so i cleaned the area well before
putting things back together. In another 5-10 K miles I will open up
the timing belt cover to see if more oil comes in.
My cost:
gates timing belt 27.00
2 pulleys repacking 50.00
several types of bolts
to make lock pins 7.00
total 84.00 + taxes
I used the waterpump from a bad spare motor I purchased along with the
rest of the car. The pump from the bad motor was installed about 1.5
years ago but felt real tight and showed no adverse signs of wear. I
believe a new waterpump would cost about 120.00.
Was it worth it?
Yes, for several reasons. First even if I had gone with a new waterpump
I probably saved close to 250.00 in labor
Second, I got a close look at how things are fitted and work on this
16v twin cam motor.
Lastly, I have the confidence to check for timing belt wear and signs of
oil leaks way before the 60K recommended service life of the belt. I
think learning to RR timing belt on the Mi16 engine is never wasted
given the need to replace every 60K and given the high-cost consequence
of belt breakage.
The first time, do it slowly and with a lot of care!
