405 Heaters...what a joy. As some of you may recall, mine became
inoperative and I was stuck without heat. It came back to life 3 days ago
and now I have heat, but I am not going to even bother touching the
temperature dial until I replace the auto controls with manual (I'd rather
have heat all the time instead of no heat). But I have found an even better
way of regulating the heat without using the fan control. By switching
between the fresh/recirculating functions (the little slide control directly
above the heater control dials), you can modulate how much heat comes into
the car, from not much at all to the usual blast furnace setting. This is
what I did on my way down and back from Wash DC the other day, and it worked
great (only problem is that when the heat is off, car tends to fog up).

PS - Car report for the DC trip? Saw a 604 and a Fiat X1/9 being trailered
together, lots of 505s, saw a beat up old Citroen SM on the streets in
Georgetown, and saw a late model Fiat Punto - with regular DC plates instead
of diplomat plates!

>My controls also just broke. No defrost. And, the heater core air plenum
flap is stuck on hot. By the way, the fan does not make a good regulator of
the interior tempature. There is enough free air flow to make the interior
quite hot.
