'91 Mi16 for sale, and my poor turbo

Hiya guys,
My poor 505 has a blown head gasket. At least. The oil was full of
fuel. They got it running for about three minutes, and yoghurt was
shooting out of the dipstick. There's also oil in the turbo, which,
according to them, could be a result of blowing back through the pcv
system, not necessarily from a blown turbo (I hope not, the turbo was
replaced and has not many miles on it). They also had acorns
machine-gunning out of the tailpipe, damned squirrels! Add at least a
muffler, if I can't shake the acorns out, maybe even a cat. They quote
$800 for doing the head gasket, as Todd at Merrymeeting Auto in Topsham,
Maine, is not a Peugeot fan, so he jacks his labor rates. That price is
excluding any head problems. P&J's Auto Park has a running motor, turbo
and all, from a wrecked 505, he'll let it go for $500. He said he'd take
my old motor out for me... Or, I could do it myself (shudder), I've done
head gaskets before, and at least the 505 is all stainless when it comes
to exhaust hardware... Any thoughts? How much for a gasket set? Has
anyone done one here, anything that makes it too difficult for the
amateur? I've been told that cracked heads have to be "remanufactured",
as opposed to having the cracks welded, although no one has told me what
remanufacturing actually means... What is remanufacturing, and how much
does it cost?
Also, while I was talking to Jim at P&J's, he told me about a '91
405Mi16 twin cam, 142,000 miles, dark green with black leather, runs very
good, he's got about 2000 miles on it since he fixed it from a minor
front end hit in which he replaced the hood, grille, fenders i think...
It has one ticky lifter he said. He said that the interior wasn't
showroom, but it was damned close. I forgot to ask about the paint,
other than the replaced body parts are the same color, sorry, I'm kinda
preoccupied with my own car... P&J's Auto Park, Durham, Maine, (207),
353-6322. I have not seen the car, and it's too far to ride my bicycle,
but I always go to them for junkyard stuff and they've always been more
than fair, both Jim and Pete are nice guys. If anyone calls, tell 'em
Howard sent ya, maybe he'll give me a break on that engine...
Thanks guys,
Howard Nichols,
Freeport, Maine
