Are you getting 0 pressure? I've been able to catalog two common
problems with all the email I got since I put my 505 turbo project
on the web:
-cracked head, usually between cylinder 2 and 3, some or no pressure
-damaged piston, most of the time no pressure, usually the front one,
altough Alan's brother had 3 pistons damaged I think.
Not one confirmed case of damaged rings (beside high mileage
replacement) or blown head gasket. Of course, now that I've posted
that I'll probably get a few email stating the opposite :)
Most of the time, either the engine knocked, the cooling system
was not working properly etc... but mostly, a damaged wastegate
and/or fuel pressure regulator. The 505 turbo is a car you cant
run if something is not working properly. Oh yeah, and the most
scarry story: a guy in france told me he bought a 505 turbo with
a disconnected overboost switch. When he reconnected the thing,
it continuously would drop rpms etc. The wastegate actuator was
shot, and it had been covered by disconnecting the switch. Sure
was a fast 505, but it would have been short lived had he not
found that right away...

That would point to pressure building up below the pistons in the
crankcase due to damaged rings or piston, but could be other things.

As long as you have the patience and the tools, it not that
difficult. Just long. As for gaskets, you'll need intake and
exhaust gaskets, top timing chain gasket, head gasket and valve
cover gasket at the very least.
