Any Diesel specialists out there?

I need some advice regarding diesel engines (non-turbo). Don't all rush! I
have a 404 diesel (XD88 engine). When the engine is warm and I'm motoring
along I notice little puffs of whitish smoke coming from the exhaust. At
the same time, the engine seems to splutter and runs a quite rough. Is this
to do with injection or perhaps something else like head-gasket/valve seals?

When I start up on a cold morning, my Pug puts out a huge amount of white
smoke which goes away as the engine warms up. It seems to smoke more than a
diesel should. This huge cloud of smoke doesn't smell like oil, but rather
diesel which is why I'm not sure about it. Your expert opinion will be much
appreciated.
