I found my '87 505sti to be a suprisingly good getaway car. Compare the
firm suspension, lack of roll, gripping seats, and power-assist steering of
my peugeot to the floaty susp., and sluggish full-power steering of an
average American car. As long as I keep turning and staying away from long
staits I feel I had an advantage. Here is my story:
One night, in my hometown of West Haven, a friend and I were stopping at a
convience store to get food. The entrance is right before the 'stop here'
line (which people should start using!)of an intersection. The oncoming
car stopped on the line so I could enter. As I started towards the
entrance a car almost hit me as it passed the stopped car on THE RIGHT
where no lane existed. I exchanged horns, dirty looks and the appropiate
gestures. I then proceded into the parking lot. The offending car
followed me in. I had made a big mistake.
My friend who attended the local high school immediately recognized the
kids to be members of our local 'wanna be' gang, "The Horsemen" ooooooh. I
stopped my car and four large high school drop outs got out of the other
car. I didn't hesitate to shift to reverse and leave. They followed in a
mid-90s Chevy cavalier.
My extensive knowledge of all the side streets and main roads combined
with my experience of my peugeot's handling made short work of our 'would
be' chasers. I doubt they remembered what the car looked like since I've
been driving around w/o incident for a year. After all, what does a
peugeot look like anyway? Most teenagers haven't got a clue. Unless, of
course, they're friends with me.
