'87 505STI gas smell while accelerating

Hey there-
my 505 produces a raw gas smell under heavy acceleration- any ideas why?
A reliable source said maybe the accumulator is at fault. Also, I have
never known another 505turbo, do they all make such a "turbo" air
blowing noise when the turbo kicks in? -but everything seems fine, lots
of power.
