starter problem

My 85 XN6 wagon with 140,000 miles filed to start this morning. It was about
20 deg F, turned the key, got the starter solenoid clicking but no starter
motor cranking. I left the ignition on, hooked an alligator clip to batt +,
touched a long screw driver to the starter solenoid terminal, touched the
alligator clip to the screw driver and it started right up. When I got to
work after a ten minute drive, it started normally with the key. Same thing
happened on this wagon about a year ago and has not happened since. I should
have gotten out the DVM and see exactly where the problem was but I was in a
hurry to get to work this morning. Oh well, I needed instant gratification.
