I had an 84 also and know how frustrating it was to track down what you
describe. I think the microswitch could be a candidate but not the injectors
( they would be causing the symptoms all the time ).
Sounds like its temp related, so I would check the items that are
temperature switched. Hope you have the xn6 book.
The relays and temp sensors for egr, AIR, open vs closed loop working of the
frequency valve.(for this last test you need a multimeter that can read
duty-cycle )
Also the warm control pressure of the warm-up regulator.
BTW
A friend had the same symptoms and after checking all the above and not
finding anything, he discovered a broken ground wire.
