Trying to mate a diesel engine to a non-diesel 4HP requires the flywheel,
flexplate, bolts, bellhousing, and dust covers from an 86 diesel; and then
the transmission is not matched to the diesel internally. (There are more
than 10 versions of the 4HP22 used in 505s, precisely matching engine
characteristics to load and gearing).
As with any major conversion there are many other complications, involving
at least the radiator and hoses, exhaust, engine mounts, fuel filter and
lines, air filter, engine wiring, instrumentation, engine oil cooler,
transmission cooler lines, battery, speedometer drive gearing, rear axle
gearing, and front springs.
If the wagon currently has a 5-speed, there is the additional complication
of replacing the transmission mount, driveshaft, torque tube and A-arms,
speedo cable, transmission wiring, and shifter assembly including console.
Anything is possible, of course, but be prepared.
