$6000 or so in repairs later, my Peugeot pulls like a schoolboy. Yes, it is
running well. However, various squeaks, rattles, vibrations and creaks are
thwarting my entry to motoring nirvana; in fact they are driving me nuts.
I'm probably demanding too much of the car, considering it is a Peugeot
(every Pug I've ever been in has had dashboard rattles) and 12 years old to
boot. But I'm wondering if anyone has solved, or has a theory concerning
solving the following?
(1) There is a mild, but annoying, vibration in the ride, which is
particularly noticeable on the freeway. Not only does it make my jaw
vibrate, it also makes the front passenger's seat back rattle. One gets the
impression that something is marring that otherwise fabulous Peugeot ride.
The mechanic says the tie rods and the u-joints are fine. I'm thinking
wheel balance, slightly buckled wheel, or maybe a brake problem (i.e., a pad
hitting a warped rotor, which is a problem that my car exhibits at low
speed --- clack, clack, clack.) Does anyone have any other ideas on what
the cause would be? Also, does anyone have addressed a rattling passenger's
seat before? (I presume that the answer is to tighten every nut and screw
in sight and maybe strategically jam something somewhere in between the back
and the seat.) It's driving me nuts.
(2) The dashboard squeaks and rattles seem to be from three sources. (a)
The surround for the heater controls (black in color) squeaks and creaks
against the main body of the dash. (b) The upper glovebox lid. (c) The
lower glovebox lid.
(3) The sunvisors squeak where they are held in the middle.
Consequently, I drive down the road banging the dash, pressing down on the
seat back, and fiddling with the sunvisors.
Turning up the radio is not a solution in rural Arizona, where all we can
get is Country.
