405 Mi16 broken timing belt

Hello,

I need to clarify something I said earlier: The timing belt break on
an XU9J4 engine will cause catastrophic valve and guide damage. However,
since mine broke by having the belt get its teeth (cogs) shaven off while
still rotating the cams, all 16 valves got trashed. If an engine has a
distinct belt breakage, it is possible that fewer than 10 valves
have been bent. Perhaps someone here could attest to how many valves
have been crushed on their typical broken belt head crashes. The bottom
line is, however, that you will be off the road with that car for close
to 2 weeks, if everything that needs to happen does happen on time
with no hitches. I was down for a good 4 weeks with my disaster. I
bent 2 brand new valves during timing belt installation, by pinning the
intake camshaft into proper position and then attempting to index the
exhaust cam into position and striking the wide open intake valves for
cylinder #4 with its intake valves, so I had to have the valves fixed
after removing the head over again and then re-ordering another $65
headgasket, etc. Needless to say, I won't be making that mistake again.
It was not until then that I knew that: a) the intake cam pins into
index timing belt installation position with two valves at their max
open position, and b) that the valves from opposing sides of the head
can actually strike each other. :^(
