Although it may seem that the tires are in excellent condition, this may not be
the case. I would check the circumfrence of the tread to see if part of the
tread has separated from the rest of the tire. This happenned on my father's
'82 Volvo Wagon. We heard an increasingly loud thumping sound coming from the
rear. The tire had not gone flat at all; rather, a strip of tread had separated
(but was still attached on one end), and was hitting the wheel well with each
revolution. Could be the case. BTW, the tires were Michelin X.

Subject: Strange Noises: Any Ideas?

Here are the symptoms of a strange noise that developed on a three mile drive
home tonight in my 88 505S Turbo 5-speed (79k miles, overall excellent
condition).

1) It occurs only when coasting or on overrun.
2) It is a speed-related, decreasing in frequency but not pitch as speed
drops.
3) The sound is a low-pitched rubbery "flop-flop-flop," almost like a flat
tire.
4) It stops completely when power is applied.
5) It ceases on brake application.
6) It appears to be coming from in front of the foot pedal area, but it is
diffused, not seeming to come from one location.

All tires are in good condition and properly inflated. There is nothing
obvious hanging loose beneath the car. The car accelerates, shifts, steers,
rides and brakes normally, and clutch function is as normal. The sound was
totally absent earlier today, and from the time it began it has gotten
progressively louder, audible over a rather loud radio with windows open.
The sound does not change when turning. The sound is sufficiently serious
that I hesitate to drive the car any distance without having some idea of
what is going on.

Any budding Maigret (sp?) care to hazzard a guess on this mystery?
