Cleaning empty engine compartment

My 505 TD wagon restoration project creeps on. The engine is out and
half dismantled. Looks like I may need a new crankshaft because when
the rod bearing gave it appears to have scored and grooved the journal
and the sides beyond the point of machining.

BTW, do the xd3t and the xd2s use the same crankshaft?

Also, with the engine compartment bare and all the nooks and crannies
visible and accessible, I notice a lot of grease, caked oil and dust,
etc. Before putting an engine into it I will probably try to get as
much of the stuff out as possible. It would be helpful to hear what
others have used to tackle similar situations. I was thinking of just
using a good spray on degreaser followed up by scrubbing with a coarse
brush, and then a hot water rinse. Are there better ways? Are there
wires and connections I should watch out for on a diesel car? thanks
