Months ago you or someone else reported the same problem and I believe I
posted the procedure for permanently disabling the variable power assit by
cutting a couple of wires under the dash below the glove box. I think you
will find it in the archive.

I disabled mine 4 years ago after having to wrestle with the steering in
various parking lots. the thing would turn on and off at will. Someone
familiar with the v6 car recommended permanently disabling the variable power
and I did. Feel no diference at all, and the problem of the disappearing
power steering has not surfaced since. If filling and bleeding the steering
pump does not cure your ill, and you are interested to know exactly which
wires to cut email me and I will be happy to drop my glove box and check for
you.
