Is it proportional to the speed of the car or to the speed of the engine? What
happens when you put the car in neutral when you are driving at say 35 mph and
the engine RPM drops? Does the ticking drop with the engine RPMs, or does it
slowly decrease with the speed of the car? If the former, you could pretty much
isolate it to the engine (ie, sticking or unadjusted valves, etc.)

I can hear a faint ticking noise (careful with the jokes!) that seems to
come from the gear shift lever area. Its frequency is proportional to the
speed of the car and persist whether the clutch is engaged or not. It is
present whether the engine is running or not.

I have checked all four tires for foreign objects, and found only a small
tack. Removing this did not solve the problem.

Any ideas, short of attaching myself to the bottom of the car (while in
motion) with stethoscope in hand?

Thanks,
Karl
