Engine is way better than transmission. engine is acknowledged as among the
best V6s ever built, and the transmission among the worst, so you decide how to
rate the car that has both of them.

I have a V6 (manual). Love the car. It's the best handling peugeot I have
driven.
I don't know how or what to check for the transmission. In fact, one of the
dreads of the 4hp22 is that it goes bad without warning!
As for the engine, make sure it has not been abused by looking for tell tale
signs of abuse -- oil leaks, engine/valve noises, coolant leaks, etc.
look for routine body and suspension wear and tear. Oh yes, make sure the ABS
works without hitch, and also watch for flashing codes in the dash Good luck
