cleaning out PCV system zdjl (2.2) engine

Each type of engine on the 505 seems to have a different PCV system, and
the 2.2 engine has a system that I don't quite know how to clean out. I
know it needs cleaning because there is oil at various hose ends and
under the engine sort of like it needs a rear main seal. I was told
sometime back by Tom Rogers, a peugeot mechanic in Annapolis, that on
the 2.2 engine when the pcv is clogged it will act like a bad engine
main seal.

I took off the valve cover today and noted several things;
first, someone tried to cut the inside of the valve cover to get to the
steel gauze filter but, it seems, stopped halfway. The steel wool is
still in there with an opening cut right untereath it which not big
enough to withdraw the steel wool.

second, the color of the inside of the head, including the lifters,
valve springs, is reddish brown, maybe a burnt brown. There is
significant accumulated dirt/crud to be found in areas where oil can
pool -- like along the top of the lifters.

My questions are:
One, how do I clean the pcv thoroughly? what can/should be done with
the steel wool n the valve cover?

Two, how to get the accumulated dirt and crud flushed out the engine?
one idea i have is to use kerosene and pour it in through the head and
let it drain out the oil pan with the drain plug open; until I begin to
see clear kerosene flow out. Any better ways out there? thanks in
advance.
