and I believe I read somewhere that Mercury (as in the outboard boat motor
company) was involved in the head design itself. Anyone know about the
latter?

I don't know about any Mercury Marine involvement with Peugeot, but they have
done this kind of contract work before: they did the castings and assembled
the Lotus-designed, limited-production ZR-1 32-valve quad-cam aluminum V8 for
the Corvette.
