505 TD VACUUM PUMP

I have intermittent assist on the power brakes so am assuming it is a
vacuum problem. I took off one of the vacuum hoses and I still have
vacuum...don't know how much until I put a gauge on it. A very quick
check does not show any broken or disconnected hoses. I thought I heard
(or maybe it was my imagination) a new noise from the vacuum pump
recently. Owners manual says vacuum pump requires no particular
maintenance (read expensive throwaway ?). I have 4 Peugeot manuals and
none cover the vac pump that I can see. I see vacuum supplied to at
least EGR, brake master cylinder, HVAC controls. If there is a vac
supply tank I have not found it yet? I'll swap Peugeots with the wife
until I can correct.
Is there any way to service a vacuum pump like drain the oil and add
fresh? I don't see any obvious drain/fill ports. Do they fail slowly
or all at once? Thanks for any hints on troubleshooting.
