With your jumper you have already bypassed the safety switch, which is on
the transmission. You have bypassed the entire starter switch circuit.
Only the battery, battery cables, and starter (including solenoid and
bendix) are left, assuming the engine is free to turn.
If you jump between the two large contacts on the solenoid with a
screwdriver, the starter motor should run (without engaging the flywheel to
turn the engine.) If it does not, and the battery and cables are good, the
starter motor is bad. If it does, the solenoid and bendix are suspect.
Even if it is just the bendix or solenoid, a new or rebuilt starter may be
indicated, as individual components may aproach the cost of a whole starter.
