I've owned my diesel 504 a little over a year now. And, find it to be a
bit more reliable than the two 505's I've owned previously. I find that
it's built more solid than the 505's in that I never hear rattling
noises from anywhere anytime...even on the pothole infested streets of
SF. It's ride is more comfortable than the 505 to me (and, ALL of my
friends who have ridden in both models think so, too). It is
underpowered for passing and getting up some of these big a#! hills, but
so what. I don't worry much about passing, considering you're lucky to
do 40mph (20mph sometimes) on the innercity freeway, anyway. Otherwise,
with 4 lanes to choose from there's really no need to do fast action
passing. Out where it's more open, and at higher speeds, it's easier to
keep up with and pass traffic, too. The handling isn't as tight and
sure as the 505, but somehow I find the manual transmission to be more
helpful in day to day city driving over the 505 automatics. The 504
seems to be more agile, but clumsy at higher speeds than the 505, too.
Since the 504's profile is taller, wind can be a problem.

I still get between 25-28 mpg and with diesel being cheaper than
unleaded at $1.43 to $1.71/gallon, it is far more economical than my
previous 505 diesel and gas cars.

New/used parts haven't seemed to be a problem to get either. And,
though most 504's (and alot of 505's) I see around here tend to be
banger material, I still see quite a few motoring around.

All said, I've found it to be the perfect city car for driving and
parking...gotta love those huge black rubber bumpers while everyone else
has molded coloured plastic!
